It's 3:57 PM October 10, 1999 Avebury Wiltshire England
I think this is my favorite place in all of Britain. Granted
every picture I have sent is a poor representation of the actual
experience. This picture is the worst of all because what I really
want to convey is not an image but a feeling. Avebury is truly
a magical place for me.
Four years ago I was in England for the first time, I spent 1
week in London and 1 week in Wiltshire. My last night in England
was spent hanging out in a pub in the town of Wootton Bassett.
I had met a young lady named Mandy. I had mentioned I was heading
back to the states the next day and she said, "You can't
leave England until you've seen Avebury". I said, "Avebury
what is that?" She said, "It's an ancient stone circle
like Stonehenge and it's only ten miles down the road. My friends
and I sometimes go out there at midnight and take off our clothes
and run around naked." I said, "Where do I sign up?"
… We went to the site and it just happened to be during the
perseid meteor shower. She was moving about asking me if I could
feel the energy pockets in the surrounding meadow. Many of the
stones have names such as the "Devil's chair". The Whole
experience was very inspiring especially with meteors flying through
the sky. The Muses were definitely being fed that night.
Avebury at midnight has mystery abound. To me it's not frightening
but at the same time it feels like it should be … even in
daylight. The stones so frightened the Christians in the 17th
century that they created a campaign to dig holes, push the stones
over and bury them. They seemed to have stopped only after a falling
stone killed someone. So it goes many of the stones survived.
The feeling I can get at a 5000-year-old site for ritual and or
burial puts me in touch with the mysteries of history. I can't
explain it but it is very powerful.
I have written one piece of music inspired by Avebury and I imagine
there will be more. I spent four hours yesterday shooting pictures
of the site. I look forward to coming back.
I love this place
